All public websites share at least one common goal – increasing exposure of the site through user searches. The most obvious answer to achieve this goal is to adopt SEO.
"SEO is just another form of marketing; marketing never ends and therefore SEO never ends. It is a long term strategy that needs to be part of how you operate online."
The main goal of SEO is getting search engines to rank your site well in organic results based on keywords relevant to your offering. Well is a relative term, but first prize is to be on the first page and then in the first three to five listings in the results of the first page.
Search Engine Optimization is divided into two parts:
- On-site optimisations - making sure search engines understand your content and emphasise the correct information on your site when it gets indexed. This is a crucial step in ensuring that your target market gets presented with a highly contextual page based on their search. Example; for an online clothing store we would ensure that all the different categories get optimum focus, like t-shirts, shoes, and trousers. A prospect searching for a type of shoe, i.e. "sneakers", would then stand a chance of finding your sneakers category shoe page. If the search was more specific, for example "Supershoe air limited edition 550G" then that specific shoe page should be optimised for ranking well in search engines
- Off-site optimisation, more commonly known as link building - this is a much more time-consuming task and involves reputation building. In its simplest form it's about a process of gathering external links to link to the site being optimised. Proper care needs to be taken in insuring that these back links occur in the appropriate context.
Unlike most other forms of online marketing, search engine optimisation can take quite a while to take effect; part of the reason not having control over the determination of rank. It is lead exclusively by the search engines who don't generally acknowledge SEO companies and their methods of trying to manipulate ranking of websites.
